Vriesea 'Porto' (Flaming sword)

The Vriesea 'Porto' originates from areas in South America. This stunning plant has a rosette of bright green leaves with a central vibrant red flower. This plant is part of the bromeliad family and In its native habitat this plant is epiphytic and is found clinging to trees. 

Care Difficulty: Easy care needs.

Light requirements: For best results pop in a spot where it will receive bright but indirect light, away from radiators. Avoid direct sunlight as this can scorch the leaves.

Humidity: Enjoys humidity. You can give it regular misting or place in a room near a humidifier. Bathroom and kitchens are also beneficial for humidity.

Watering: Water throughly when the top 2 inches are dry. Do not allow this plant to sit in water as this can cause the roots to rot. Make sure the central well is filled up too. Try using lukewarm water in order not to shock the plant.

Toxicity: Non toxic to humans and pets

Fertilising: Doesn't require much feeding but if you do want feed it do so at the beginning of its growing season (spring/summer) Follow the instructions on the fertiliser packaging for proper application. As a general rule don't feed in winter.

Repotting: Repot every few years making sure you use a soil designed for orchids and anthuriums. This plant will produce pups. when they are about a third of the size of the parent you can pot them up. the mother plant will then die back.
