  • This genus of 650 ferns grows worldwide, with the Asplenium nidus originating from East Africa, tropical Asia, the Pacific Islands and Australia. In its natural environment, the Asplenium nidus grows as an epiphyte, this can also be replicated when it is kept as a houseplant, though it grows equally well as a potted plant.

The wonderful ‘Crispy Wave’ is a hybrid of A. nidus, created in 2000 from A. nidus ‘Osaka’ and an unnamed and unpatented A. nidus in Japan by Yuki Sugimoto. ‘Crispy Wave’ is known for its almost leathery textured foliage, and its dense, stiff and curvy fronds.

This fern has an upright growth pattern, unlike other Asplenium ferns that tend to overhang their pot or growing space. The attractive wavy foliage is thick and normally a vivid yellow-green colour. New fronds grow from and unfurl from the centre of the plant. It is a plant that is highly efficient at converting CO2 and is known for its air-purifying properties.

  • Care Difficulty: This plant has easy-moderate care needs.

Light requirements: Birds Nest Ferns prefer moderate indirect light, they must be kept shaded from direct sunlight.

Watering: Prefers to be kept consistently moist, water when the top inch of soil is dry, and never let it dry out completely. Make sure not to overwater this plant as it doesn't like sitting in water which could lead to root rot. Make sure it's in a pot with good drainage. Avoid watering the center of this plant as this can also cause root rot.

Humidity: A lover of humidity, this plant hates dry air or a cold drought. To make sure your plant is getting adequate humidity, place it in a steamy bathroom or kitchen or group plants together near a humidifier. Daily misting is beneficial.

Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and pets.

Feeding: This can be fed once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) reducing to nothing in winter.

Repotting: Re-pot once the roots have filled their current pot. This is usually done in spring. Only re-pot into a container that is one to two sizes larger so the plant does not go into shock.
