  • A beautiful variety of the rubber plant, the Ficus elastica ‘robusta’ has large, deep green, glossy leaves. Originating from the Himalayas, Malaysia, India and Eastern Asia, the original plants on the market had narrower leaves, but have been replaced by varieties such as the ‘robusta’ that are easier to grow and maintain.

In the early 1900’s the milky white sap was used to create rubber, which is where the plant got its common name. The plant can grow up to 3 metres when growing indoors and up to 30 in its native habitat! The Ficus elastica is an air purifier, known to remove volatile organic pollutants from the atmosphere.

  • Care Difficulty: An easy care plant for your collection.

Light requirements: Prefers bright but indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight can cause the leaves to burn. Can tolerate a shadier spot but this can cause slower growth.

Watering: This plant likes to dry out slightly between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to avoid root rot. Overwatering can cause leaves to fall off.

Humidity: Can tolerate average household conditions but will prefer a slightly more humid environment so make sure you are misting occasionally. This plant likes to have its leaves cleaned with a damp microfiber cloth.

Toxicity: Toxic to humans and pets due to having latex in the sap.

Feeding: Enjoys a feed every month in spring and summer, reducing to none in winter.

Repotting: Ficus Robusta will only need a repot when they get too big for their current pot, only increase the pot size to one size larger.
