RATING: The boston fern is moderately easy to care for.

LOVES: Keep in a warm semi-shady spot away from direct sunlight (this will scorch the leaves and dry the plant out). Nephrolepsis exaltata plants adore and require high humidity - a humidifier or daily misting around the foliage are advisable.

HATES: Over and under-watering. Ensure you keep the soil of your Nephrolepsis ‘Green Lady’ fern moist but not soggy throughout the year.

  • The Nephrolepsis Exaltata, commonly known as a Boston fern is native to the tropical and humid areas in Central and South America, all the way to the West Indies. Ferns and Boston fern plants became popular during the Victorian era and were often kept in conservatories and glass cases as the coal and gas used in houses at the time would kill the ferns. With the move away from these heat sources and radiators becoming the heat source in many homes, Nephrolepsis and other types of fern have become favoured plants for houses.

Boston ferns, with varieties such as the Green Lady fern, are a great addition to any home and are easy to care for as long as the conditions are suitable. Not only are they ever-green, with wonderful arching fronds, but they also act as an air purifier.

  • Care difficulty: Boston Ferns are moderately easy to care for given the right conditions.

Light Requirements: Place in a semi-shady environment away from direct sunlight.

Humidity: Humidity levels are key to the survival of Boston Ferns. This plant will love a bathroom or kitchen where humidity is at its highest. Humidifiers can be purchased to improve a room's humidity or daily misting of the area around the Nephrolepsis will help.

Watering: Regular watering is key to the plant's survival, keep the soil moist at all times but don’t waterlog. Water when topsoil feels dry.

Toxicity: This plant is safe for children and pets.

Feeding: Fertilise once a week with water-soluble feed, or follow the instructions given on your feed of choice, these can include slow-release fertilisers.

Repotting: Younger Nephrolepsis Exaltata ‘Green lady’ plants will need repotting once a year. Do not bury the crown when repotting the Boston fern.
