  • Philodendron hereraceum var. hederaceum is often sold under the incorrect name Philodendron scandens micans due to its slightly more complicated botanical name. The plant originates from Tropical America and is a sought-after houseplant due to its easy care and beautiful foliage.

The name Philodendron derives from the Greek philo (love) and dendron (tree) as this hemi-epiphyte plant loves to grow up the trunks of trees in its native habitat. The common name, Velvet Leaf Philodendron, refers to the soft texture of the leaves that are a deep green colour with beautiful purple-red hues underneath when the plant is juvenile.

  • Care Difficulty: The velvet leaf Philodendron has easy care needs.

Light requirements: Medium to bright indirect light is best and will help the leaves retain their purple/reddish colour. Philodendron hederaceum can tolerate a slightly shadier spot, though this can lead to smaller growth and less vibrant hues of colour. Direct sunlight will scorch the leaves.

Watering: Allow the top inches of soil to dry out between waterings and ensure the plant is potted in well-draining soil. Never allow this plant to stand in water as this can lead to root rot and plant collapse.

Humidity: Philodendron hederaceum also known as Philodendron micans will be ok in average household conditions but to give it an extra boost you can increase the humidity by grouping plants together, misting or placing them in a bathroom or kitchen. Do not place this plant in a cold or draughty area. The velvet leaf Philodendron will only thrive in temperatures above 15°C.

Toxicity: Toxic to humans and pets due to the presence of calcium oxalate.

Feeding: Like many plants, this Philodendron can be fertilised in spring and summer.

Repotting: Likes to be repotted once the plant's roots have outgrown its current container. Size up one to two inches bigger than its current container and make sure the pot has adequate drainage holes. This plant is easy to propagate from stem cuttings, just place a cut stem in water and wait for roots to form before planting into soil.
