RATING: Medium care level - String of Pearls house plants can sometimes be a little tricky to care for.

LOVES: Senecio Rowleyanus enjoy bright but indirect light. They should be watered thoroughly allowing the soil to dry out inbetween from spring to autumn. Ensure you water from the bottom up by simply placing your String of Pearls plant in a tray and allowing it to soak for around 20 minutes. Reduce this frequency in the winter.

HATES: String of Pearl succulent plants do not like being misted as this will lead to rot.

  • Latin name Senecio Rowleyanus, better known as ‘string of pearls’ get its name from their green, circular ‘pea-like’ leaves that quickly grow in a hanging fashion. This succulent is part of the aster family, which are typically native to southwest Africa where they grow along the floor while being shaded by taller plants, meaning that they love dry atmospheres while being out of direct light.

These plants’ little leaves hold pods of water inside, which allows them to be drought resistant, giving them their succulent-like care. The Senecio Rowleyanus is sought after for its long stems and ability to produce small white flowers in spring.

  • Care difficulty: As long as this plant gets enough light and is not overwatered then it will thrive

Light requirements: Lots of bright light out of direct sunshine is needed to ensure the leaves don’t get sunburnt

Watering: Water once every 1-2 weeks allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. The best way to water this plant is from the bottom by soaking it in water in order to prevent root rot

Sizing: Current pot diameter is 14cm, but the stems can trail up to 3 feet long

Humidity: This plant does not need high levels of humidity, so misting is not necessary for this plant to survive

Toxicity: This plant is toxic to animals

Feeding: Water once a month in the spring-summer months
