Begonia maculata (Polka Dot Begonia)
The Begonia maculata is a gorgeous houseplant native to southeast Brazil. It has the most beautiful leaves- the undersides start out red and gradually deepen in colour to purple. Each leaf is covered randomly with silvery spots. This begonia will also flower in the spring-summer months with small clusters of white blooms. A super photogenic plant.
Rating- Moderate
Loves- A bright spot away from direct sunlight. A few hours of afternoon sunshine are beneficial in winter, keep soil moist but allow it to dry out in between. Turn the pot every now & again.
Hates- Wet leaves (Mist the surrounding air but not the plant itself or use a humidifier)
Toxicity rating- Leaves are poisonous to cats & dogs, with the root system being particularly toxic.
