There are over nineteen species of Callisia that originate right across the Americas. The genus was first described in the 1720s by Pehr Löfling, using the Greek word for 'beauty' in reference to some of the species' foliar appearance. This variety the repens has the adorable nickname ‘Turtle vine’. As a semi-succulent, it can be sensitive to overwatering but is otherwise an easy care plant. Water when the top inch of soil feels completely dry and then let it dry out thoroughly to avoid root rot.
