  • This beautiful fast fast-growing succulent is an interesting variety of Crassula. It has wonderful almost square-shaped fleshy 'buttons' that are green and have pale yellow stripes, when kept in a bright location they can also develop a pink hue if exposed to enough sunlight.

The buttons grow in pairs of stacked leaves that grow upright and eventually trail hence its nickname 'string of buttons'. These can reach up to 2ft when well cared for. Native to South Africa, the perforata variegata enjoys bright, indirect light. The genus Crassula contains over 300 species.

  • Care Difficulty: An easy-to-care-for houseplant.

Light requirements: A sunny windowsill with bright, indirect sunlight. Some early morning direct sunlight is beneficial but keep out of midday sun as super-bright rays can burn it. Can withstand a shadier spot but this can cause leaf discolouration and lack of variegation.

Watering: Water when the soil starts to fully dry out, then give it a good drink. Succulents hold water in their fleshy leaves so can go with periods of drought. Do not let this plant sit in or be overwatered as this will cause the plant to die. Try to avoid getting the leaves wet.

Humidity: Crassula perforata does not require humidity and will do well in average household conditions.

Toxicity: Toxic to humans and pets.

Feeding: In its native habitat the Crassula perforata grows in poor soil so doesn't not require much feeding. Opt for Cacti and Succulent feed if you choose to fertilise.

Repotting: Does not need repotting regularly, only repot if completely necessary using a well-draining succulent and cactus mix with good drainage. This succulent is easy to propagate by stem or leaf cuttings in spring and summer if you want to make the plant more compact.
