These ‘jewel orchids’ are part of a variety of terrestrial (ground) growing plants, originating from South-East Asia. They grow underneath forest canopy, on the jungle floor, in high humidity, staying moist for extended periods of time. Jewel orchids are unlike regular orchids, and are grown for their velvety foliage that has stunning shimmery detail. Not commonly found in plant shops, they make great houseplants and are also perfect for closed terrariums. These specimens have been grown in their preferred substrate, sphagnum moss, but they can also be grown in houseplant soil.
