Opuntia cochenillifera (Prickly pear)

This potted cactus is from the Opuntia genus and is commonly referred to as a prickly pear. This variety has two potted stem sections or ‘paddles’ which will grow and form extra leaves if kept in the right conditions. The stems are a dark matte green with creamy coloured areoles. The botanical name for the variety comes from when this cactus was used as a host plant for cochineal beetles, these beetles were bred to produce red dye.

LOVES- Bright locations, well draining soil.

HATES- Overwatering!
