  • The Tradescantia ‘nanouk’ has many common names from the ‘Inch plant’ to the ‘Wandering Dude'. Tradescantia is a genus of around 85 different species, originating in the Americas (from Canada all the way to Argentina). The nanouk is a cultivar that was created in Sappemeer, the Netherlands, in 2012. It was cultivated to produce a plant that was compact, upright and broadly spreading, as well as focusing on the foliage colour and its performance growing inside.

The nanouk has gorgeous coloured leaves ranging from light pink to green with a striped effect. A fast grower, so prune back to prevent leggy stems and use these cuttings to propagate! Either pop these cuttings in water or back into the soil and roots will start to form. Perfect for a shelf or hanging basket.

  • Care Difficulty: The inch plant is easy to care for.

Light requirements: Tradescantias likes bright but indirect sunlight. But too dark a spot will cause the colours on the leaves to fade and become leggy.

Watering: Allow the soil to dry out a little between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to avoid root rot.

Humidity: While preferring a humid environment, Tradescantia can tolerate average room humidity. Often rooms such as the bathroom or kitchen can have higher humidity.

Toxicity: Toxic to humans and pets

Feeding: Enjoys a feed during spring and summer, don’t feed during winter.

Repotting: The inch plant will need repotting roughly once a year. Check to see if roots are coming out of the bottom, however, if your plant looks healthy and isn’t rootbound there is no need to re-pot.
