  • Native to the Cape of South Africa, this beautiful and interesting succulent is from the Crassula genus, one of approximately 300 species. The leaves are wonderful almost square-shaped fleshy ‘buttons’ in pairs on stems that will branch upwards eventually trailing giving it its common name, the Jade necklace! It is often also referred to as a string of buttons.

As the plant grows, it becomes too heavy to hold up its foliage, so it tends to trail, with its stems reaching up to 2 ft! The Jade necklace prefers not to be handled frequently due to the ‘powdery bloom’ on its foliage, this is the presence of epicuticular wax which helps the plant to reduce water loss.

  • Care Difficulty: This plant has easy care needs.

Light requirements: A sunny windowsill with bright indirect sunlight will suit this plant best. Can tolerate some direct sunlight in the morning and afternoon but no midday sun.

Watering: Water thoroughly and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering further in winter, Crassula marnieriana does not like to sit in water.

Humidity: Prefers a dryer spot, avoid placing it in more humid rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms. Likes fresh air - especially in summer. No need to mist.

Toxicity: Toxic to humans and pets.

Feeding: Feed during spring and summer.

Repotting: Crassula marnieriana does not need repotting very often. Repot when becoming rootbound. This plant is also easy to propagate by taking stems cuttings and placing them in cacti and succulent soil.
