  • The Platycerium bifurcatum is an unusual and interesting plant that grows naturally on tree trunks in Australia - commonly known as the staghorn fern due to the horn-shaped appearance of the fronds, some of which will be fertile, and others sterile. These fronds sometimes produce spores that appear like a brown fuzz. These should not be removed (unless used for propagation) in order to keep the plant healthy. The shield fronds that surround the base of the fern are essential to its survival, shielding the root ball.

These fronds start out light green but turn brown with age, growing over one another to envelop the root ball. In their natural environment, the shield fronds act like mulch for the plant, due to the collection of water and forest debris. This plant works well in a kokedama or mounted onto wood.

  • Care Difficulty: An easy care plant for your collection.

Light requirements: Unlike other ferns the Staghorn Fern prefers bright but indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight can cause the leaves to burn.

Watering: This plant likes to be allowed to dry out slightly between watering. In winter, reduce watering to avoid root rot. Bottom watering can be used to avoid damaging leaves.

Humidity: Prefers a humid environment. Places such as the bathrooms or kitchens will have higher humidity. In hot, dry weather make sure to mist around once a week.

Toxicity: Non-Toxic to humans and pets

Feeding: Can be fertilised once a month in Spring and Summer using a fern feed, or by following instructions on the fertiliser of your choice.

Repotting: Generally needs to be repotted every 3 - 5 years or when they get too big for their current pot - be careful to not damage the roots.
