Background & Origin
Aspidistra elatior, commonly known as the cast iron plant, is a hardy evergreen perennial native to the forest floors of Japan and Taiwan. It belongs to the Asparagaceae family and became especially popular during Victorian times, valued for its resilience and ability to thrive indoors with minimal attention. In its natural habitat, it grows slowly in shaded woodland conditions, developing long, strap-like, deep green glossy leaves. Although primarily grown for its striking foliage, it can occasionally produce small, discreet brownish-purple flowers close to the soil during summer.
