Why Crassula Make Great Houseplants

Crassula - commonly known as jade plants or money plants - are iconic succulents with thick, water-storing leaves that help them survive long dry periods. Their resilience makes them one of the easiest indoor plants to grow, thriving even with occasional neglect.

They offer timeless appeal with their clean lines, glossy leaves and naturally sculptural shapes. As they mature, many take on a bonsai-like, tree-shaped form, giving them a sense of longevity and calm presence. Compact, adaptable and elegant, they fit effortlessly into any décor - from modern minimalist spaces to bright, leafy corners.

With proper light and the right watering rhythm, a Crassula can live for decades, making it a meaningful and enduring addition to your indoor plant family.

Crassula Care Guide

Light:

Crassula loves bright light and can handle a few hours of direct sun. A bright windowsill or well-lit room is ideal. Low light will make the plant leggy and pale.

Soil:

Use a gritty, free-draining compost or a specialist cactus mix. Drainage holes are essential to prevent root rot.

Watering:

Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings, and reduce frequency in winter. Over-watering is the most common mistake.

Temperature:

Normal indoor temperatures are perfect. Keep away from cold draughts or very humid rooms.

Feeding:

Feed occasionally during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertiliser or cactus feed. Stop feeding in winter when growth slows.

Maintenance:

Remove dead or damaged leaves, wipe dust from foliage, and rotate occasionally so the plant grows evenly.

Frequently Asked Questions - Crassula & Jade Plants

What is a Crassula or Jade Plant?

Crassula is a genus of succulents known for their thick, fleshy leaves and woody stems. The jade plant (Crassula ovata) is the most popular type, often called the money plant or lucky plant.

Where should I place my Crassula at home?

A bright, sunny spot like a south- or west-facing window is ideal. It needs plenty of light to keep its shape compact and its leaves vibrant.

How often should I water my Crassula?

Only water when the top few centimetres of soil are dry. During summer this might be every 2–3 weeks; in winter, water very lightly or not at all.

Do jade plants flower indoors?

Yes, mature jade plants can bloom with small white or pink star-shaped flowers if they receive enough light and experience cooler nights during winter.

Is Crassula suitable for beginners or busy plant owners?

Absolutely. It’s one of the easiest houseplants to grow - tolerant of neglect, infrequent watering, and changes in light. Perfect for beginners.

What soil and pot should I use?

A well-draining cactus or succulent mix is ideal. Terracotta pots are best as they allow excess moisture to evaporate naturally.

Can a Crassula live long-term indoors?

Yes. With adequate light and good drainage, jade plants can thrive indoors for many years, even developing a miniature tree-like form over time.
