Background & Origin
Pachypodium lamerei, commonly known as the Madagascar Palm, is a dramatic succulent prized for its thick, silver-grey trunk covered in sharp spines and topped with a crown of long, glossy green leaves. Despite its common name, it isn't a true palm but a drought-tolerant succulent native to Madagascar. Its bold, sculptural form makes it an eye-catching statement plant for bright indoor spaces. With plenty of sunlight and careful watering, it can thrive for many years and may even produce fragrant white flowers as it matures.

Quick Care Guide

Is This Plant Right for You?
This plant is a great choice if you:
- Love unusual, sculptural houseplants
- Enjoy bold architectural forms
- Have a bright, sunny spot at home
- Prefer drought-tolerant, low-maintenance plants

Light
- Best light: Bright, warm position with several hours of direct sunlight each day
- Avoid: Dark, shady spots or north-facing rooms

Watering
- Frequency: Water thoroughly only when the soil has completely dried out
- Seasonal note: Reduce watering significantly in winter when the plant becomes semi-dormant and growth slows almost to a stop

Humidity
-Prefers: Low humidity and good air circulation
- Extra humidity helpful?: No. Native to arid regions, it thrives in dry indoor conditions.

Feeding
- Feed with: A cactus or succulent fertiliser (or a balanced houseplant fertiliser at half strength)
- Frequency: Once a month during spring and summer. No feeding is needed during autumn and winter.

Toxicity
- Pet safe: No
- Notes: Toxic if ingested, and the milky sap can irritate skin and eyes. The sharp spines can also cause injury, so keep out of reach of pets and young children.

Repotting
- How often: Every 2–3 years, or when root-bound
- Signs it's needed: Roots growing from the drainage holes, the plant becoming top-heavy, slowed growth, or the soil drying out very quickly. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one and use a free-draining cactus compost.
