Background & Origin

Austrocylindropuntia subulata is a cactus native to the Peruvian Andes. Once classified under Opuntia, it was reclassified as one of 11 distinct Austrocylindropuntia species. This striking cactus has a branched trunk with areoles that produce clusters of spines, along with multiple fleshy, awl-shaped leaves (hence the Latin name subulata). Its sculptural form and architectural growth make it a visually compelling addition to indoor or outdoor collections.
