Lettuce on a stick…the common name for the Brighamia insignis. This plant is a member of the larger bellflower family and is one of many Hawaiian lobeliads. This peculiar but wonderful plant has a thick stem, topped by clustered leaves, and can produce flowers. Although also known as a Hawaiian Palm, this plant is not a palm at all! The thick stem stores water for the plant, so ensure you all the plant to dry out before re-watering. Unfortunately this plant in now endangered in its native habitat due to the extinction of Hawaiian hawk moths, but can be kept as a houseplant instead as it is now grown in cultivation.
