Background & Origin
Brighamia insignis, commonly known as “Lettuce on a Stick” or Hawaiian Palm, is a unique member of the bellflower family and one of Hawaii’s endemic lobeliads. Native to the Hawaiian Islands, it features a thick water-storing stem topped with clustered leaves and can produce delicate flowers. Though not a true palm, its architectural form makes it striking indoors. In the wild, it is critically endangered due to the extinction of its natural pollinators, the Hawaiian hawk moths, but it thrives as a cultivated houseplant.
