Background & Origin

Cleistocactus strausii, commonly known as the Silver Torch Cactus, is native to the high-altitude regions of north-western Argentina and southern Bolivia. It grows naturally on rocky mountain slopes and arid valleys in the Andes, where conditions are harsh—intense sun, cool nights, and very little rainfall. To cope with this environment, the plant developed its dense covering of silvery-white spines, which help protect it from strong sunlight and sudden temperature drops. First described in the late 19th century, Cleistocactus strausii has since become a popular ornamental cactus worldwide, valued for its striking upright form and dramatic appearance.

Light requirements: Bright sunny windowsill with some direct sunlight being beneficial. A south facing windowsill is ideal.

Watering: Water thoroughly but allow this plant to dry out completely between waterings. Very drought tolerant, better to underwater then overwater. Reduce in winter.

Humidity: Does not need any extra humidity.

Toxicity: Toxic to humans and pets

Feeding: Enjoys being fed during Spring- Summer growth period once a month. Always follow the instructions on your feed of choice. Cactus feed is best

Repotting: Repot around every year or two -check to see if the roots are coming out the bottom of the pot! Don't mind being a little root bound.
