Background & Origin
Cleistocactus winteri, commonly known as the Golden Rat Tail cactus, is native to the rocky, mountainous regions of Bolivia. It naturally grows wedged between stones and on steep slopes, where its long, cylindrical stems cascade downward as they mature — an adaptation that allows it to trail safely over rock faces. Belonging to the cactus family (Cactaceae), it is well suited to bright light, sharp drainage, and periods of drought typical of its native habitat. In cultivation, it has become popular for its soft golden spines and its striking salmon-pink to orange tubular flowers, which emerge in warmer months when conditions mirror its South American home.
