Background & Origin
Euphorbia lactea 'Cristata', often called the Coral Cactus, is a unique plant created by grafting two euphorbias together. The base is usually Euphorbia neriifolia, while the top is the crested form of Euphorbia lactea, which grows in a fan-shaped, ruffled pattern resembling ocean coral. This unusual growth form is caused by a natural genetic mutation known as cresting, where the plant grows in an irregular, flattened shape instead of a single stem. Members of the Euphorbia originate from regions of Africa and Central America, and although slow-growing, this plant can eventually reach around 60 cm tall and wide. Like many euphorbias it produces a milky white sap that can irritate skin and is toxic if ingested, so it should be handled with care.
