Background & Origin
Euphorbia erythraea, commonly known as the Candelabra Spurge, is a tall, architectural succulent native to the dry regions of Ethiopia, Eritrea, and parts of Sudan in East Africa. Despite its cactus-like appearance, it belongs to the Euphorbia genus and is therefore a succulent rather than a true cactus. In its natural habitat it grows in hot, arid environments with rocky, well-drained soils, where its thick ribbed stems store water to survive long periods of drought. The plant develops upright, branching stems that resemble a candelabra, often forming impressive tree-like structures that can reach several metres tall in the wild. Like many euphorbias, it produces a milky white latex sap that helps protect it from herbivores but can cause skin irritation if handled.
