Background & Origin
Mammillaria nejapensis, commonly known as the Owl Eye Cactus, is a small globular cactus native to Oaxaca in Mexico. It is now also widely cultivated in the UK as a hardy, ornamental collector’s plant. This charming species typically grows to around 5cm in diameter and is known for its neat, symmetrical arrangement of white spines tipped with brown, often forming an owl-like pattern. The lowest spine is the longest, with progressively shorter spines above, enhancing its distinctive appearance. It is also notable for its occasional dichotomous branching, where the stem splits into two. In summer, it produces small, funnel-shaped white flowers that emerge from the crown.
