Muehlenbeckia australis is native to New Zealand, where it grows naturally as a vigorous climbing or scrambling vine in forests, woodland margins and coastal areas. Its Māori name Pōhuehue refers to the plant's traditional presence in the New Zealand landscape. It belongs to the Polygonaceae family, the same family as buckwheat and sorrel.
