Background & Origin
The olive tree (Olea europaea) is a hardy, evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean Basin, including regions of southern Europe, North Africa, and western Asia. Cultivated for thousands of years, it has deep cultural, culinary, and symbolic significance, often representing peace, wisdom, and longevity. Olive trees thrive in dry, rocky soils and warm climates, and many ancient groves are still productive today. Their fruit, olives, and the pressed oil have been central to Mediterranean diets and trade for millennia.
