Background & Origin
Pleiospilos nelii, commonly known as the Split Rock Plant, is a fascinating succulent native to the arid regions of South Africa. It consists of thick paired leaves separated by a central fissure, closely resembling split stones or pebbles — a natural camouflage that helps protect it in the wild. Its fleshy grey-green leaves are often speckled with darker markings, and mature plants can produce large daisy-like flowers in shades of yellow or orange.

Quick Care Guide

Is This Plant Right for You?
This plant is a great choice if you:
- Love unusual succulents
- Enjoy compact, conversation-starting plants

Light
- Best light: Bright warm spot with direct sunlight
- Avoid: dark shady spot

Watering
- Frequency: Pleiospilos nelii should only be watered when the soil is completely dry and the newest inner leaves begin to feel slightly soft or wrinkled. Never water if the plant feels squishy or has more than two pairs of leaves, as this usually indicates overwatering. When watering, soak the soil fully and allow excess water to drain away completely. Reduce watering heavily during winter and peak summer dormancy, and avoid watering entirely while the plant is “splitting,” as it naturally re-absorbs moisture from its older leaves.

Humidity
- Prefers: No humidity
- Extra humidity helpful?: These plants are native to arid conditions and do not require humidity.

Feeding
- Feed with: Does not need feeding
- Frequency: N/A

Toxicity
- Pet safe:Yes
- Notes: Keep out of reach of pets and small children to avoid damage.

Repotting
- How often: Once a year
- Signs it’s needed: Roots growing out of the drainage holes, slower growth, or soil drying very quickly. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one to avoid overwatering.Opt for a soil that has a maximum of 20% soil with the rest being, grit, sand and perlite.
