Overview

Disocactus anguliger syn. Epiphyllum anguliger is native to the humid rainforest of Mexico, where it grows as an epiphyte, using its roots to attach itself to other plants. Recent molecular testing has meant that it has been reclassified into the Disocactus genus.

The unusually long flat shape of its stems gives this plant its more common name the ‘Fishbone Cactus’. The Latin term anguliger means angle bearing, again referring to the plant stems that have “angled teeth” shapes. The stems initially grow upright, starting to trail as they get to longer lengths, which means the zig-zag cactus looks great in a hanging basket. Given the right conditions, these plants can flower.

Quick Care Guide

Care Difficulty: An easy house plant to care for.

Light requirements: Disocactus anguliger likes bright but indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight can cause the leaves to burn and dry out.

Watering: Unlike other types of cactus the Fishbone Cactus does not like to dry out completely. Allow half of the soil to dry out between watering. In winter, reduce watering to when all the soil is completely dry.

Humidity: While preferring a humid environment, the zig-zag cactus can tolerate average room humidity. Often rooms such as the bathroom or kitchen have higher humidity.

Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and pets

Feeding: Enjoys a cactus feed around once a month in spring and summer, cutting back to once every 6-8 weeks in winter.

Repotting: Fishbone cactus generally need repotting roughly around 2-3 years, they don’t mind being a little rootbound, in fact, they’d prefer this to being frequently re-potted.
