Background & Origin
Ornithogalum dubium, commonly known as the Orange Star Flower, is a bulbous perennial native to the Western Cape of South Africa. It grows in sunny, well-drained habitats where it experiences cool, wet winters and dry summers. The plant produces glossy, strap-like green leaves and striking clusters of vivid orange, star-shaped flowers that typically bloom from March through June. Quick Care Guide

Is This Plant Right for You?
This plant is a great choice if you:
- Want a bright burst of seasonal colour indoors
- Enjoy long-flowering, low-fuss plants
- Like compact plants with a tidy, strap-leaf form

Light
- Best light: Bright warm spot without direct sunlight
- Avoid: dark shady spot

Watering
- Frequency: Water when the top third of soil is dry.
- Seasonal note: Reduce watering in winter when growth slows to almost none.

Humidity
- Prefers: Average household humidity is fine
- Extra humidity helpful?: Too much can cause powdery mildew

Feeding
- Feed with: A balanced houseplant fertiliser
- Frequency: Once or twice a month during growing season during spring and summer. No feeding is needed during autumn and winter.

Toxicity
- Pet safe: No
- Notes: Keep out of reach of pets and small children to avoid damage.

Repotting
- How often: Once every 2 -3 years
- Signs it’s needed: Roots growing out of the drainage holes, slower growth, or soil drying very quickly. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one to avoid overwatering.

Dormancy Care:
Allow foliage to die back in late summer, then cut it down. Move the potted bulb to a dark, cool location for a few months and water sparingly. In spring, as new growth appears, bring it back into a bright spot out of direct sunlight and resume light, regular watering.
